What we do
Sylvan AV is a guitar amplifier maintenance service, repairing audio electronic equipment in Farnham (Surrey). We provide a fast and friendly service that is competitively priced. We repair amplifiers by all of the main manufacturers including Fender, Marshall, Peavey, Mesa Boogie, Supro and many more.
Most of the amplifiers we repair are valve based, but we do see plenty of solid state equipment too.

This is the fee for opening up the amp and providing a fault diagnosis. This also covers the first hour of work. After the diagnostic period, we will contact you to provide an update. Where possible we will also estimate the duration of the repair. If after the diagnostic period we believe a repair to be uneconomical we will advise of this. The diagnostic fee is the minimum labour charge for any repair and is charged even for repairs that become uneconomical.

If you ask us to continue beyond the diagnostic period, we charge an hourly fee. Minor parts are included in the hourly rate. More expensive items, such as valves, transformers, vintage components, power transistors etc. will be charged. We select the best value parts and offer the customer a choice of parts where appropriate.

A typical service of a medium complexity valve amp is usually a 2-3 hour job and includes cleaning pots, checking valve bases, checking connectors, re-soldering dry joints, testing and biasing output valves, preventative maintenance, replacement of out of tolerance or defective components and output power testing. Solid state amp service includes all of the above that are applicable, normally completed within 1-2 hours.

If past experience leads us to expect that the repair is likely to be uneconomical (ie greater than the cost of a replacement amp), we will advise you of this before taking the amp in. Furthermore if in the course of the diagnostic period we judge the repair to be uneconomic, we will inform you of this, but the diagnostic fee will still be charged.
